About
Calcutta Rescue is a UK charity which funds organisations that provide vital healthcare, housing and education to people living in poverty in Kolkata, India.
Calcutta Rescue Fund was founded in the 1980s to support the work of Dr Jack Preger, the pioneer of street medicine, who devoted his life to assisting people living in extreme poverty in Kolkata’s slums. UK volunteers who worked with Dr Jack subsequently set up Calcutta Rescue Fund as a UK charity to help fund Dr Jack’s work.
Calcutta Rescue Fund is part of Dr Jack’s legacy, and continues to fund the work to which Dr Jack devoted his life.
Dr Jack worked through an Indian charity, Calcutta Rescue (India), and Calcutta Rescue Fund (UK) supported Calcutta Rescue for several decades.
Sadly, Calcutta Rescue Fund had to stop funding Calcutta Rescue in 2024 due to an internal governance issue with the Indian charity.
The skilled and experienced senior management team from Calcutta Rescue moved to a different charity, the Divine Script Society (DSS), where they have continued Dr Jack’s work.
Since December 2025, Calcutta Rescue Fund has supported the work of DSS.
Your donations provide people in the slums of Kolkata with free healthcare, education, sanitation, and other support.
That work remains as important as ever and I have complete confidence in the commitment and skills of the team who are going to be running the organisation, having worked alongside them for many years.
Please support them in any way you can."
