Overseas volunteer medical students

Background

Calcutta Rescue has a team of qualified doctors who provide medical services at three clinics, two schools, and in street medicine vehicles.  Some of the doctors have worked for Calcutta Rescue for over 20 years and are personally committed to serving the very poorest people in deprived communities.  

Calcutta Rescue looks for ways to improve the efficiency and impact of its medical services .This includes training assistants in the clinics to take on more skilled tasks to support the doctors.  Overseas volunteers play an important role in improving the skill levels in the busy clinics by way of quality improvement activities

Legal basis

Medical students can observe and assist the CR clinical team only . However Medical students may self identify audits and surveys they may be interested to conduct.

The roles

Chronic Disease Management Clinics

  • Assist in the management of patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.
  • Review patient chart and medical histories.
  • Assist in reviewing and developing new protocols for chronic disease management.

Health Screening and Data Auditing

  • Participate in the development of health screening proformas for various populations.
  • Conduct health screenings for individuals and groups, including Calcutta Rescue’s school children as directed by Dr Ghosh.
  • Collect and analyze health data, including diabetes and MCH data.
  • Present findings from data audits at Doctors’ Meetings and the Medical Audit Committee.

School Health Program

  • Assist with medical examinations of newly admitted children at Calcutta Rescue’s schools.
  • Observe children during immunizations 
  • Help monitor children on the nutritional program 

Training and Quality Improvement

  • Identify and implement quality improvement activities to enhance clinical care.
  • Conduct mandatory training sessions on resuscitation, infection control, and safeguarding.
  • Observe Outreach activities out in the field.

Other Responsibilities

  • Attend  monthly Doctors’ meetings to share insights and collaborate with colleagues.
  • Engage in activities related to climate change and its impact on health.
  • Maintain high standards of professional practice and competence as per relevant guidelines and regulations.
  • Utilize current evidence to inform new or existing guidelines and protocols.

Essential Qualities: 

  • A current medical student
  • Good interpersonal/ communication skills 
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English 
  • Computer literate 
  • Flexibility/Adaptability with a sense of humour 
  • Ability to work well in a multicultural team 
  • Commitment to volunteering overseas 

Desirable Qualities:

  • Travel or work experience within a developing country 
  • Knowledge of Bengali or Hindi Language
