Volunteer Clinical Nurse Specialist
Hours: 40 hours over 5 days
Reporting to: Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Health & Operations)
Accountable to: Clinical Volunteer Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator
& CEO.
Summary
The volunteer nurse will provide clinical advice and support to all clinic staff with
specific relation to infectious diseases and TB.
In consultation with the Clinical Volunteer Coordinator, clinic Doctors and staff, the
volunteer will identify areas that need further development and subsequently
evaluate, devise and implement strategies to address these needs.
The volunteer has essentially a supervisory and teaching role but some hands on
medical activity may be necessary.
The volunteer is required to attend our clinics in the morning and complete any
computer work, administrative paperwork and attend meetings in the afternoon.
Responsibilities
• Contribute to the running and development of the clinics in collaboration with
the Doctors and other allied medical staff.
• To encourage staff to follow evidence based practice and ensure a high
standard of patient care within the limitations of the clinic.
• Identify areas in the TB programmes that need further development and
subsequently devise, implement, monitor and evaluate strategies to address
these needs.
• Prepare clinical reports and statistics as required in conjunction with medical
staff.
• Develop, deliver teaching sessions for clinical staff, provide advice and
guidance with regards to TB and related issues and ensure that feasible
health, safety and infection control measures are maintained in the clinics.
• Maintain good communication and professional interaction with relevant staff
and volunteers.
• Establish contact and liaise with other health service providers where
appropriate
• Participate in the development of information systems for patients
• Access, evaluate, present and assist in the implementation of current research
findings and evidence based practice.
• Use knowledge of research based practice to update and present new
guidelines/protocols to the Medical Audit Committee or Doctors Meeting and
update practice as required.
• Contribute cohesive reports for submission to Quarterly reports and Support
Groups.
• Attendance at meetings: Volunteer, MAC (Medical Audit Committee) and
Doctors meeting
• Work alongside Clinic Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator on any relevant
tasks assigned to improve clinical practice or increase the profile of Calcutta
Rescue.
• Work alongside other volunteers on a rota basis at our weekly Fairtrade
Handicraft Stall operated by Calcutta Rescue
• Maintain high standards of professional practice and competence in line with
nursing code of conduct or relevant professional body and local health
authorities.
Essential Qualities
• Registered Nurse with demonstrable experience in TB or Infectious Diseases
• Good interpersonal/ communication skills
• Good knowledge of written and spoken English
• Computer literate
• Flexibility/Adaptability with a sense of humour
• Ability to work well in a multicultural team
• Commitment to volunteering overseas
Desirable Qualities
• Tropical Medicine Qualification
• Travel or work experience within a developing country
• Knowledge of Bengali or Hindi Language
