Volunteer Nurse – Wound Care

Summary:
The Wound Care nurse is responsible for overseeing the provision of wound care
in the organisation and ensuring that patients receive the best possible treatment
and highest standards of care.The role is predominantly one of capacity building
and will require the provision of expert advice, education, mentorship and support
to local staff. In doing so the Wound Care nurse will be expected to draw upon the
best available and up to date evidence whilst taking into consideration both
environmental and financial constraints. The nurse will work as part of the
multidisciplinary team and in addition to local staff provide support to fellow
volunteers and management.

 

Responsibilities:
• Oversee the provision of wound care at our Nimtala, Chitpur, Tala Park and
Street Medicine clinics.
• Ensure that wound care staff have the relevant knowledge, understanding and
skill set to provide the highest practical standards of wound care.
• Plan, implement and evaluate current wound care practice and provide
innovation and new ways of working in order to improve the service.
• Ensure local staff adhere to and understand the need for accurate and ongoing
documentation.
• Draw upon the best available, relevant and up to date evidence in order to inform
current or new guidelines and protocols. Work in accordance with the audit
committee and multidisciplinary team in order to implement such
guidelines/protocols.
• Provide ongoing evaluation and reports to the team as a whole as well as the
relevant senior management and support groups.
• Develope an evaluation format that leads to enhance a yearly evaluation of the
quality of the wound care service.

• Attendance at meetings: Volunteer, MAC (Medical Audit Committee) and
Doctors meeting
• Work alongside Volunteer Coordinator on any relevant tasks assigned to
improve clinical practice or increase the profile of Calcutta Rescue.
• Work alongside other volunteers on a rota basis at the weekly Fair Lawn
Handicraft Stall operated by Calcutta Rescue
• Maintain high standards of professional practice and competence in line with
nursing code of conduct or relevant professional body and local health authorities.

Essential Qualities:
• An experienced Registered Nurse or Community Nurse
• Experience in assessment/treatment of chronic wounds/burns
• Good interpersonal/ communication skills
• Good knowledge of written and spoken English
• Computer literate
• Flexibility/Adaptability with a sense of humour
• Ability to work well in a multicultural team
• Commitment to volunteering overseas


Desirable Qualities:
• Knowledge of tropical medicine
• Travel or work experience within a developing country
• Knowledge of Bengali or Hindi Language
Reporting to:
Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Health & Operations)
Accountable to:
Project Doctors, Volunteer Coordinator and CEO.
