Volunteer Physiotherapist

Hours: 40 hours over 5 days

Reporting to: Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Health & Operations)

Accountable to: Project Doctors, Clinical Coordinator, Volunteer
Coordinator and CEO.

Summary

The volunteer physiotherapist will supervise, assist and work closely with the local
qualified Physiotherapist of Calcutta Rescue at the general clinics, leprosy clinic,
mother/child health clinic and schools.
The role includes making visits to patients admitted at Nursing Homes or at their
home to evaluate the progress of their treatment, and making suggestions for
supplying various mobility aids and appliances in collaboration with the local
physiotherapist.
The volunteer is required to attend clinics in the morning and complete any computer
work, administrative paperwork and attend meetings in the afternoon.

Responsibilities
• On-going education of staff regarding the role of physiotherapy in patient
management.
• Liaise with doctors, staff and volunteers to encourage teamwork.
• Assess for and recommend supply of suitable aids (wheelchairs, walking aids,
splints, prosthesis etc.) and educate patients regarding their correct use.
• Ensure ongoing evaluation of physiotherapy service provided by all clinics e.g.
monitoring number of patients treated, discharged, defaulting etc. and report
in specified format to Medical Audit Committee every 3 months.
• Contribute to the tri-monthly report and other reports as requested by
management.
• Attend MAC meetings/Doctors meetings as required to share relevant
information and assist in the implementation and monitoring of decisions
made.
• Attend volunteers meetings.
• Evaluate training needs for local staff and organize in-house or outsource
training.
• Write hand-over reports for the incoming physiotherapist and update
placement description.
• Work alongside Clinical Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator on any relevant
tasks assigned to improve clinical practice or increase the profile of Calcutta
Rescue.
• Work alongside other volunteers on a rota basis at the weekly Fairtrade
Handicraft Stall operated by Calcutta Rescue.
• Maintain high standards of professional practice and competence in line with
nursing code of conduct or relevant professional body and local health
authorities.

Essential Qualities
• Qualified physiotherapist with experience of providing training to others.
• Good interpersonal/ communication skills
• Good spoken and written English.
• Excellent organisational and communication skills.
• Computer literate
• Flexibility/Adaptability with a sense of humour
• Ability to work well with in a multicultural team.
• Commitment to volunteering overseas


Desirable Qualities
• Ability to improvise and work with very limited equipment and material.
• Travel or work experience within a developing country
• Knowledge of Bengali or Hindi Language
