Living with his 78-year-old mother hasn’t stopped Shibu Mukherjee from playing a key role since the coronavirus lockdown began, bringing medicine and food to needy patients in high-risk areas.
“Our patients are so vulnerable and poor, I am compelled to go and provide them the medicines. Where will they go if we can’t help?” says Shibu,
“I’m being very careful about keeping social distance and maintaining all the protocols to keep myself, our patients and also my family safe.”
Normally Shibu works with the street medicine team delivering healthcare into slums across the city. But since the crisis began he has also helped out at Tala Park clinic and at the charity’s TB clinic. Wherever the need is greatest, Shibu helps out.
Recently he has come across people struggling to find food. “Some patients of Nonadanga area and Bagbazar told me that they were not getting food or rations regularly from local government. We told them to let us know whenever they need help. We will be trying our best to help.”
Talapark clinic is under containment zone where movements are usually restricted. The work has become harder. Working under the threat of COVID 19 is definitely worrisome for our staff as well.
Shibu is working at Calcutta Rescue for 20 years and he says: “My mind is at peace following CR’s work over the last few weeks.”
